What is operated today as the Fife Circle Line was built by multiple companies, lots of branch lines started to appear as early as the 1840s. However, there is one key obstacle which prevented the lines from initially joining up: the Firth of Forth, a massive estuary north of Edinburgh. Spanning over 8000 ft, the almighty Forth Bridge carried the railway high above the water and opened a vital connection between north and south.
